Kei Kaisendon Review (Rivervale Mall)
Kei Kaisendon 海鲜丼 at Rivervale Mall is located on the second floor of the neighbourhood mall, in between an Indian dance school and a home DIY store. The mall is not connected to any MRT station and is 1.3km away from Sengkang MRT station. Kei Kaisendon’s unit at this mall is very small with seating capacity estimated to be less than 8 seats.
We chanced upon this outlet on FoodPanda and made use of 3 of the food delivery app’s S$8 vouchers on three different occassions for self-pickups. We got a regular Kei Signature Kaisendon with Kei Sauce for our first order. Its usual price is S$18.10 on FoodPanda, but after applying a S$2.72 self-pickup discount and S$8 discount voucher, we ultimately paid only S$7.38 for each of the rice bowl. The ordering process was smooth and the item was ready when we reached the outlet 15 minutes later.
As we took out the seafood rice bowl after reaching home, we were pleasantly surprised by its appearance. The rice bowl was filled with fish and scallop, and the garnishes looked colorful and appetizing. After taking a few mouthfuls, we were satisfied with its taste and texture. The sushi rice complemented very well with Kei’s homemade soy sauce and the flavourful garnishes. However, we find that the qualify of their seafood, particularly the tuna and salmon, was a little lacking in quality. While they were edible, they were either not of good grade or were not very fresh. Sashimi from Don Don Donki will beat them hands down in terms of quality and freshness.
We got a regular Kei Kaisendon for our second order as well, but requested for their Yuzu Wasabi sauce instead. We noticed that the fish cubes this time were lesser and the kizami nori (shredded seaweed) was missing. On top of that, the taste was not as good as we had with the Kei sauce. The yuzu taste was almost non-existent while there was a fishy taste to the dish.
For our third order, we decided to test their consistency by ordering the Kei Kaisendon with Kei sauce like we had for our first order. Upon reaching home and taking out the bowl, we found that two garnishes were missing this time – kizami nori and sesame. The fish in the rice bowl was also lesser than in our first order. While the overall taste and texture was better than with yuzu wasabi sauce, it was different from our first encounter. There was again a fishy aftertaste and the rice-ingredients ratio had increased noticeably.
In summary, we find the seafood donburi average at best. Their taste, quality and quantity of ingredients were inconsistent over our three visits. We were a disappointed with the freshness of its seafood and the missing garnishes in two of our visits. We give the quality of their seafood rice bowl a 3/5, its value-for-money a 4.1/5 (considering the self-pickup and FoodPanda we received), Kei Kaisendon’s service a 3.5/5, and environment of their Rivervale Mall outlet a 3/5. If there were no discount, we find their donburi overpriced and does not commensurate with its quality and quantity.
