What is NS55 credits and who is eligible to receive them?
NS55 credits, officially known as National Service 55 (NS55) Recognition Package, is a reward given to past and present NS servicemen for their contributions to Singapore’s defence and security. All NSFs, past and present NSMen from both SAF and HomeTeam will receive S$100 credits that they can utilise at participating merchants.
Eligible personnel for this reward will be notified via mail. The credits will be progressively added to each individual’s account from 1 July until 30 July 2022. To redeem the credits or check its balance, you can download the LifeSG app and then login with SingPass.
On top of the cash credits, NSMen are eligible for one-year SAFRA or HomeTeamNS principal membership for free. For the free SAFRA membership, a separate registration is required. For the free HomeTeamNS membership, only those without HomeTeamNS membership will need to register to receive the free membership. One year extension will be automatically added for existing members.
Where can I redeem NS55 credits? List of all NS55 merchants
The NS55 credits can be spent at any online or offline merchant that accepts NETS QR or PayNow UEN QR. The following is a non-exhaustive list of participating merchants where you can use your NS55 credits:

Some of these merchants offer additional discounts and freebies when you pay for their products and services using NS55 credits. Until 31 July 2022, NTUC FairPrice is offering a $6 return voucher for spending a minimum of $55 in a single receipt using NS55 credits.

How to convert NS55 credits into cash?
Since the credits started to be added into recipient’s LifeSG account, many have spared no time in utilising them. Apart from redeeming the credits at restaurants and supermarkets, tech-savvy guys found a hack to convert the digital credits to cash at Sheng Siong Supermarket’s $TM machines (the chain’s proprietary ATM that dispenses cash).
These $TM machines are located at almost all of Sheng Siong’s outlets where one could withdraw cash using OCBC/UOB ATM card, PayNow, SoCash, or Singtel Dash, albeit with a S$0.20 service fee. As of 9 July 2022, the only Sheng Siong outlet WITHOUT a $TM is at Blk 258 Pasir Ris Street 21.
As the NS55 credits are redeemed by scanning participating merchant’s PayNow QR code via the LifeSG app, similarly you can also scan the PayNow QR code at Sheng Siong’s ATM to withdraw cash. Many Singaporeans have successfully tried this hack on 6 July 2022 and shared their stories online.
On 7 July 2022, the $TM PayNow service was put under maintenance and no withdrawals were allowed. It was only until 8 July 2022 that the service resumed. On 9 July 2022, MINDEF responded to Channel News Asia’s query about the legality of encashing NS55 credits. In MINDEF’s official words, “National servicemen are free to decide how they would like to use the credits.“
Hooray! For those who are still undecided whether to convert their credits to cash for fear of violating any rules, regulations or laws, now you are free to do so! You can also consider topping up your YouTrip wallet with the NS55 credits and convert it into foreign currencies.
Steps to withdrawal NS55 credits at Sheng Siong's ATM
- Locate a Sheng Siong’s Simple Teller Machine ($TM)
- Tap on “PayNow” option
- Select “Other Amount”
- Enter “90” and tap “With Receipt”. As there is a S$0.20 service fee for withdrawal, the maximum you can draw in this NS55 credit case is S$90.
- Open your LifeSG app, under “Benefits and support” section, tap “View details” button.
- Scroll down to tap on “Scan QR code to Pay” button.
- Use your phone to scan the QR code on Sheng Siong’s $TM screen.
- Wait for your cash to be dispensed. Be patient, it may take some time.
- Retrieve your receipt.
- Check your NS55 credit balance in the LifeSG app. You should have S$9.80 left to use on other participating merchants.
