The Square @ Furama Review
The Square @ Furama is located on level 2 in the Furama Riverfront Hotel. Not to be mixed up with Furama City Centre Hotel that is located right next to Chinatown MRT, this hotel is located some distance away from both Outram Park and Chinatown MRT stations (about 15 to 20 minutes walk from either of them). We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and there were not many people at the restaurant. There were about 3 servers in the dining area and less than 20 customers. After queuing and waiting at the entrance for 5 minutes, we were greeted and ushered in after our reservation was verified. We were informed that the buffet excludes drinks and we could top-up $3.00++ for a 1.5 lites bottle of drinking water or $3.00++ for unlimited refill of soft drinks.
Different from many buffet providers these days where you place orders through your phone, The Square continues to adopt a self-serve buffet model. Customers would get a tray and queue at each cooking station to get a serving from their staff. After getting our first round of cooked food, we returned to our table and were surprised that the complimentary Chilli crab was placed on our table. While the staff did not check on our preference whether we like to have the chill crab or raw oyster, we decided to accept it since we were ambivalent between the two options.
After having few bites of the cooked food we got, we find that the freshness and quality of most of the dishes were subpar. Many zi-char and economy rice stalls at the coffeeshops are much better. The roasted lamb was hard, the Bak Kut Teh was more like pure pepper soup, and the black pepper crayfish and steamed seabass were not fresh. The dishes that were passable are the Laksa (though they used imitation abalone), Char Kway Tiao, Shrimp Paste Chicken and all the Dim Sums. Baked Pork Knuckle was not available on our visit, and was replaced with Cantonese Pork Knuckles with Ginger and Vinegar; it was fine even though we would have preferred soy sauce braised pork knuckles. The complimentary Chilli crab meat has a salty and weird aftertaste, and as such, we did not finish the dish (we ate all the mantou though). We would recommend diners to try out the sashimi-grade oysters instead.
In our second helping, we got all the cold dishes: salmon sashimi, fruit rojak, durian cream puff and fruit platter. These dishes were way way better! While the salmon sashimi may not be as good grade as those from 5-star hotels, it is comparable to those in regular sushi chains. We had more than 6 servings of sashimi to make up for the poor quality of the cooked food.
In summary, we rate The Square’s food quality a 2/5 and value-for-money 3/5 (considering we had a Eatigo 50% off). The attentiveness of the crew was great and tables were cleared quickly. We give their service a 4/5.
