GoroGoro Steamboat & Korean Buffet Review

GoroGoro Steamboat & Korean Buffet is hidden at a corner on Level 3 of The CentrePoint, a shopping mall along Orchard Road. The mall is in walking distance to the Somerset MRT station across the street. Visitors could either cross the road after exiting from the MRT station or walk through the underpass from Basement 2 at Orchard Central to reach The CentrePoint. The mall has seen its heyday in the 90s and 2000s, but visitors have dwindled over recent years due to competition from newer malls in the area.

We made a reservation for a Chinese New Year reunion lunch via the restaurant’s website at a price of $20.80++ per adult. We arrived at the restaurant on time and waited in the reservation queue at its entrance. After waiting for about a minute, a male staff walked out, and without any greetings, he asked whether we had a reservation. We told him the name we made the reservation under, and halfway checking on it, his phone rang and he went into the store without informing us. His female colleague then came out moments later to continue his task of verifying our booking. After minutes of ding-dongs (we were the first and only customers), we were finally ushered into the restaurant.

As we got seated, the female staff who ushered us in gave us a few ordering chits to place our orders. We noticed an order number on top of each sheet ranging from 1 to 4, seemingly to hint us that we could only make four orders at the maximum. The header on the order chits also printed “Dinner & Weekends / PH”. We didn’t think much of it and continued to mark our selections from the list of menu items.

Subsequently, a friendly and courteous male server came over to get our preferences on the soup bases and drinks. It is seldom that such buffet restaurants offer drinks without additional charges, and we were happy that they were offered. We chose Water Chestnut for our drinks, Beauty Collagen and Tomato for our two soup bases, and Flavourful Mix Specials and Fiery Mix Specials for our condiments. We then handed over our order chit of a mix of pork, beef, seafood, vegetables, tofu and cooked food over to the server.

It was pretty fast before the items were served and we noticed items like seafood and Korean chicken wings were missing. At that moment, the male staff who first attended to us at the entrance came over our table, took all our order chits and replaced with new ones. He spoke nothing and just walked away. We went through the new order chits and found them printed with the header “Weekday Lunch”. While we had no issue with the change of items if they have made a mistake earlier on, the action of this staff to quietly change the menu and did not explain the non-arrival of the other items we made on the wrong chits given earlier was rather rude. We did not sign up for Omakase and you can serve anything you want!

After going through the new list of its Weekday Lunch menu, we made a second round of order comprising of mostly cooked food. All the items arrived within 5 minutes and we started digging into the them. As we sample the food, we find the quality of the cooked food and the raw ingredients were average at best. Their dishes did not taste authentically Korean even though they have a Korean-themed interior decor and brand name.

Their soup bases lacked flavours. The Beauty Collagen soup was rather bland, while the Tomato soup came with a sourey taste of tomatoes and was not as flavorful as those we had at other restaurants or from the Haidilao soup pack. One good thing was that we did not feel thirsty after our meal, so their soups probably contained little or no MSG. As for the condiments, the Flavourful Mix Specials was the typical the peanut sauce found in most hotpot restaurants, while the Fiery Mix Specials was like the chilli with soy sauce offered by Tze Char stalls. They are good complements to the meats and vegetables but they are non-Korean taste for sure.

While the quality of the cooked food were generally fine, we do not recommend ordering their Japchae and Kimchi. The Japchae was too oily and came with a strange stale taste. Their Kimchi came with a strange stinging feel. We usually have few servings of Kimchi at Korean restaurants but we decided to stop after having one here. Their Chicken Nanban and Fries were fine but nothing to shout about. The Chicken Nanban was served warm instead of being pipping hot despite us being their first customers of the day. Their best cooked food dish was the Korean Pancake. While unlike the authentic one offered by ManNa Korean Restaurant, it was crispy and tasted like potato chips.

Regarding their raw food for the steamboat, they were fresh and nicely plated. However, as some of us do not take beef, we had issues differentiating between pork and beef from their appearance (see the photos in the menu section). The restaurant could have used a different plate or at least inform the customers on which is which. Secondly, the cut of the beef roll was subpar as it contained more fats than lean meat. Other than these two issues with the meats, the other vegetable and tofu items were good. Ending the meal, we requested a serving of Watermelon and Barley with Gingko Nuts.

Before we were about to check out, the restaurant was then more than 50% full. We were surrounded by few groups boisterous of young teenage girls throughout our lunch that made the restaurant unconducive for our catch-up chats. In summary, our stomachs were full but the food quality, service and dining experience were disappointing. We had high expectations of GoroGoro prior to our visit due to our positive experiences with Kingdom Food Group’s I Am Kim Korean BBQ at SOTA. We rate the average food quality at GoroGoro a 3/5, their value-for-money a 3.5/5, their service a 2.8/5, and their environment a 3/5. It is a place for youngters to have buffets at very affordable prices but not a place for good food and catch-up among friends.
