Yummo Chow Review
Yummo Chow is a restaurant located on the ground floor of Hotel NuVe Heritage, a shophouse hotel in the Bugis area. One can reach the restaurant by foot for about 15 minutes from the Bugis MRT station (walk towards the National Library) or from the Esplanade MRT station (South Beach Tower exit). On rainy days, it could be troublesome to reach the restaurant as there is no fully sheltered walkway from the nearest train stations or bus stops.
We got to know Yummy Chow on Eatigo as it has one of the highest number of bookings as well as largest discount on the platform. We made a booking for a 4:30pm slot on a Sunday afternoon with 60% off. We came from the direction of South Beach Tower and missed the restaurant as we strode past the hotel the first time. The hotel takes up only one unit of shophouse and signage of the hotel and restaurant on the side of the entrance were too small to be noticed. We made a U-turn after realizing we had missed the outlet and subsequently entered the hotel.
As we stepped in, we were greeted by a man sitting behind the counter right beside the door, “Hotel?”. We told him we were here for the restaurant and he ushered us to our table while still having his mobile phone in one of his hands in horizontal orientation. While walking in, we realized that that counter the guy greeted us from belongs to Yummo Chow, while the hotel’s reception is partly hidden at the other end of the restaurant area. We find that the dining area was rather small and its decor resembles that of a Toast Box outlet.
Upon taking our seats, we were given their physical menus to browse through. The menu items were similar to those we have seen online prior to our visit but the listed prices were a little higher. Their prices, if without discount, put them almost on par with the Marriot Cafe at the time of this writing. A Marriot Burger at the Marriot Cafe (a restaurant of a 5-star hotel chain at downtown Orchard Road) costs $28, while a Beef Burger costs $25.90 at Yummo Chow (a restaurant in a 3-star hotel chain in the Bugis area). Both dishes are served with some sides.
Given their pricing, we were expecting their quality to be similar with that of the Marriot Cafe’s. They ought to be serving gourmet dishes that are available at these high-end restaurants and cafes, despite having modest interior and service staffs wearing polo tees. After deliberating for about 5 minutes, we ordered a Beef Burger ($25.90) and a Double Up Grilled Chicken Chop ($26.90). The service staff took our order and then slipped the order chit through a mirror window at the other end of the restaurant.
The two dishes were served together after waiting for about 15 minutes. Both of them looked and smelled great and we were eager to try them. Upon tasting the dishes, we would rate their quality to be above average as compared to Western food at coffeeshops and hawker centres, but nothing like gourmet dishes in high-end restaurants.
While the patty of the Beef Burger was juicy, tender and well marinated, the bun they used were too soft and were very much like those from confectionaries in the heartland. The French fries looked and tasted very much like the NTUC Fairprice French Fries (imported from New Zealand) we bought lately from the supermarket chain. The salad was just a few leaves of vegetables with two cherry tomatoes without any dressing; it would have been better if they were drizzled with some Balsamic or Thousand Island sauce.
The two chicken thighs of Double Up Grilled Chicken Chop were generous, juicy and tender. The dish was served with the typical brown sauce you find with most Western stalls in the neighbuorhood, but not high-end restaurants. It was good in terms of quantity and quality, but insufficient to be considered in the gourmet category.
All in all, we had a good meal and paid around S$23 after 60% discount, and adding a 10% service charge. We find their food, environment and prices to be closer to that of Astons than with Marriot. If they were to charge their original price, we do not think it commensurate with the food, environment and service that is being offered. To sum it up, we would give their food quality a 3.8/5, value-for-money 3.5/5 (considering the final price we paid), service a 3.5/5, and environment 3.5/5.
Yummo Chow could be a good place for couples and friends seeking to to mingle over a meal in a cozy and relatively quiet environment. But if you are going only for good Western food at reasonable prices, we recommend you to try Nightshift Bistro & Bar that is also located in the Bugis area.
