Thai-licious Boat Noodles Review

Thai-licious Boat Noodles is located on the ground floor of a stretch of shophouses along Liang Seah Street. It is at the far end of the street if you are coming from the Bugis Junction (Bugis MRT station) side. As there is no shelter when you cross the street from Bugis Junction, get yourself an umbrella when you plan to visit the eatery, just in case it rains. For those who drives, there are limited open air public parking spaces at the sides of the road.

We made a reservation via Eatigo with 50% off for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and arrived at the outlet on time. There were about 10 outdoor seats along the walkway outside the restaurant and a seating capacity of around 15 in the internal air-conditioned dining area.

A female staff who speaks English with an American accent received us at the entrance and ushered us to their air-conditioned dining area. Their interior is modestly decorated with a Thai theme. At the point of our visit, there were only one pair of customers in the restaurant and we were assigned to sit at an adjacent table beside them. We were then informed that we could browse their digital menu and make our orders by scanning the QR code placed on the table with our mobile phones.

After browsing their menu for 5 minutes, we ordered a standard-sized Boat Noodles ($9.90) and a Braised Pork Knuckle Rice ($10.90). The staff then came over to confirm the items before passing it to the kitchen. While waiting for our food, we overheard conversations between the staffs in Thai and realized that the eatery is run by majority of Thais, including its chef.

The dishes were served in less than 10 minutes. We have tried these dishes at food courts as well as road side stalls in Thailand and we find that those served at Thai-licious resembled the authentic ones in appearance. After a few mouthfuls of the boat noodles (kway-teow-reua ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ) with its soup, we can attest that its taste to be equivalent to those we had in Thailand before. Its savory broth possesses a uniquely Thai taste with tints of cinnamon, anise and soy sauce.

The Pork Knuckle Rice or Pork Leg Rice (khao-kha-moo ข้าวขาหมู) was more subdued as it was rather bland. Thais are known to like very flavourful stuff, from sweet Thai Ice Tea (ชาเย็น) to spicy staple dishes like Basil Pork Rice. And this is the reason why we always see condiments comprising of chilli flakes, soy sauce, sugar and fish sauce in almost all eateries in Thailand (they are also offered at Thai-licious). Most Thais will add some of these to their dishes whenever they dine at the eateries. The Pork Knuckle offered at Thai-licious was rather flavourless, with too much fat & skin, with too little meat, and a tasteless half hard-boiled egg.

In summary, we had a good lunch in a relaxing environment with Thai radio playing in the background. The staff were also friendly and courteous. The food was authentically Thai and slightly above average than other Thai restaurants and stalls we have been to in Singapore. The only drawback was that the prices of their dishes were too high for their portion and quality if there is no 50% discount from Eatigo.

The two dishes we ordered are Thai staple dishes and sells for around 50-60 baht (~S$2.50) at food courts in central Bangkok and around 30-40 (S$1.50) baht at the roadside stalls. In Singapore, there are much cheaper authentic Thai food options with prices for staples like Thai Fried Hor Fun (pad-see-ew ผัดซีอิ้ว) selling at S$4.00 at Nakhon Kitchen. In all, we give Thai-licious food quality a 3.5/5, value-for-money 3/5 (with the discount we received), environment a 3.8/5, and service a 3.8/5.

For those who have cravings for Thai cuisine in the Bugis area, we recommend trying Pratunam Plus located in Bugis+ shopping mall. While they may not be as authentic in terms of taste, their environment, food quality, creativeness and prices are better than Thai-licious. The regular price of Braised Pork Knuckle Rice at Pratunam Plus costs S$7.90, while it costs S$10.90 at Thai-licious.

For authentic Thai food at lower prices, we highly recommend trying Sisaket at Maxwell Food Centre and Nakhon Kitchen which has outlets in Vivo City, Kovan, Compass One, Bedok, and Holland V. The chefs are Thais and many of their staffs are able to converse in Thai.
