Mun Ting Xiang Locations & Outlets 满庭香
Mun Ting Xiang 满庭香 at The MidTown, formerly known as Mun Ting Xiang Cha Xuan 满庭香茶轩, moved from its location in Hougang Green to its current two storey outlet in 2021. It claims to have operated for more than 20 years and serves traditional Tawainese cuisine.
As we are familiar with a Mun Ting Xuan Tea Hut that we had patronised occasionally in Toa Payoh for the past few years, we expected this outlet to be a branch or that same outlet have moved to this new location. We were initially confused due to the differing names the brand uses online. After visiting the other outlet that has moved from Toa Payoh to Ang Mo Kio in September 2021, we now confirm they are operated by the same company and they have a total of 2 outlets in Singapore. Mun Ting Xiang Review (The Midtown)
The MidTown is a mixed development with condominiums and retail outlets. It is walking distance from Hougang Mall, Hougang MRT and Hougang Bus Interchange. The retail section at the ground and basement levels houses a mixture of spas, massage palours, tuition centres, enrichment centres, and dining outlets. Mun Ting Xiang is located inside the building, near to Lobby A.
We visited the outlet on a Saturday afternoon. As we entered the outlet, we asked for a menu but was told they do not have a physical menu and we had to scan the QR code to view the menu.
As we have patronised Mun Ting Xiang in Toa Payoh (TPY) before, we ordered the Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice ($6.90) – a dish we usually have there. We noticed the price is higher than the Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice Set with a Iced Tea ($5.90) sold at the TPY branch, but we didn’t give much thought as they could have differential pricing due to location. We made the payment in Cash (alternatively you may pay via NETS), and proceeded to the dining area on the second level. The dining area sits around 5 tables of diners, for 15 people at the maximum. The area was cozy and clean, though it was a little noisy with kids who were dining there after their enrichment classes ended.
It didn’t take long before our order arrived. At first glance, the dish looked very similar to the one we have had at TPY outlet, with exception that the curry was not the thick-brownish Japanese curry kind. As we had our first mouth of the curry rice, it tasted like diluted local curry you would get with Curry chicken. The vegetables, chicken and chili sauce tasted very much like the TPY outlet though. We were disappointed with the chicken as it had too much skin and too little meat. For the price of $6.90, it would have been more worthwhile to dine at the western stall at the coffee shop just next to The Midtown (Chicken cutlet with fries, bread, coleslaw and baked beans at $6.50!).
In summary, we give the outlet’s service, ambience and taste a 4/5, but for quantity and value-for-money a 2.5/5 compared to the alternative choices in the neighbourhood.
