Pasar Malam, which literally means “Night Market” in Malay, has been a vibrant part of Singapore’s and neighbouring countries’ culture for decades. Unlike in Malaysia and Indonesia, where night markets are typically held at fixed locations, Singapore’s Pasar Malam are roving bazaars, staying in one neighbourhood for about a month before moving to another part of the island.

These neighbourhood night markets offer an eclectic mix of products, from bags and durians to home décor, street snacks and amusement rides. For many Singaporeans, they are more than just shopping spots, they are places to unwind and spend quality family time after a busy day. While the name “Malam” suggests night-time operation, stall vendors set their own hours. Some open as early as 10am, while others stay open until 2 am, reflecting the flexible and lively nature of these markets.

However, since 2024, the number of Pasar Malam has been noticeably declining. Contributing factors include extreme weather, dwindling visitors and rising rental costs. Stall fees can range from under S$100 to S$500 per day, depending on the location and special events. For some operators, these costs make it challenging to break even, especially during hot or rainy weather, putting the future of these beloved neighbourhood pop-up markets under pressure.
