Korean Fusion BBQ Review

Korean Fusion BBQ is situated on the fringe of Little India precinct and can be reached by foot from the Rocher, Little India, and Jalan Besar MRT stations. The nearest station is actually Jalan Besar MRT though Google Maps may recommend other stations. There is no shelter from any MRT stations, bus stops or nearest carparks at Sim Lim Tower or Sim Lim Square (unless you park on the limited slots along Dunlop Street) to the restaurant.

We visited the restaurant on Christmas Day after having made a reservation on Eatigo with 50% off a week earlier. We started walking from Little India MRT station and it took us about 15 minutes to reach our destination. The experience walking from the station to the restaurant was pretty chaotic as it started to rain and we had to walk past cramped walkways below the shophouses where there were huge crowds queuing outside popular shops along the way. We got a little wet as we needed to cross several road junctions, but we were lucky to avoid the heavy downpour that started after we arrived at the restaurant. It was later in the day that we found out that the Jalan Besar MRT station (exit Sim Lim Tower) is so much nearer to Korean Fusion BBQ! If you are visiting the restaurant by train, take note, and disregard recommendations from Google Maps.

As we reached our destination, there were few others patrons who were making their way up the stairs. We followed behind and queued to get seated. The restaurant’s all-on-one guest receiving, cashier, food serving counter is just beside the entrance on the second floor. It was clogged with people who were exiting after their meals, and us who were entering. The crowd cleared up in a couple of minutes and we were subsequently ushered to our table. We were then informed that we had 100 minutes to dine though we only have 70 minutes to make our order through their ordering platform. The platform can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the table. The staff then placed a reusable grill mat over the griller before turning on the machine and possibly the stopwatch.

From their digital menu, we noticed that they have a pretty wide variety of marinated pork, while having a more subdued list for other meats like beef, chicken and seafood. The “cooked food” was also limited and only contain rice-based dishes. The choices of side dishes, fruits, mushrooms, vegetables, surimi and sauces were good. We ordered kimchi, several portions of pork in various flavours, sliced and bulgogi beef, curry and garlic chicken, and ssamjang & bean paste for a start.

In about 5 minutes, our order number was called through the screen display and we went over the all-in-one counter to collect the ingredients. The items appeared normal and the servings were sufficient. However, we noticed their pork belly to be overly fatty with very little lean meat (that was fine by us as we were on keto diet). We put the meats to grill and got our first taste of their BBQ a few minutes later.

The taste of the meats were average though some of the cuts were tough (especially the marinated beef). The ssamjang and bean paste had no difference in taste though they were visibly different in coluors. Both of the sauces were too salty and we suspect there were MSG added to them. After we are almost done with our first round of BBQ, we ordered more meats and focused on marinated ones, accompanied with mushrooms, luncheon meat, prawns and black pepper fish. While there were nothing to shout about on the quality of the meats, their prawns were pretty big and fresh. They were served cooked but we placed them on the grill to heat them up. If we weren’t too full by then, we would have gotten more helpings of the prawns. Based on our experience from this trip, we recommend diners to get more of their prawns and kimchis and less of the meats.

Before we end our flavourful meal, we ordered two portions watermelon and pineapple slices to quench our thirst and cleanse our palette. In summary, we had a very filling buffet at a very good price. However, the quality of the food at the restaurant is average and if you are looking for better quality Korean BBQ buffet at similar price range, you may consider visiting I Am Kim Korean BBQ at SOTA for lunch on weekdays.

Prior to our visit, we read Google reviews about un-cleanliness at Korean Fusion BBQ and decided to give our feedback from this trip. We find that their air-conditioned indoor dining area was pretty tidy and clean, but their one stall washroom, tiny wash basin (probably around 10-inch diagonally) as well as dish washing area situated just beside the washroom was typical of a coffeeshop toilet. That may be considered unclean to some patrons. Nonetheless, our stomachs were fine in the next 24 hours after dining at the restaurant, so there was no cleanliness issue with their ingredients and food.

Last but not least, we give the quality of food at Korean Fusion BBQ a 3.5/5, its value-for-money a 3.5/5, its service a 3.5/5 and its environment a 3.5/5.
