What are KrisFlyer miles?
KrisFlyer is a customer loyalty programme, also known as frequent flyer programme, by Singapore Airlines.
To be in sync with common terminologies used in the aviation industry, its reward points are termed miles. KrisFlyer miles earned can be used to redeem full flight tickets, upgrade seat class, or offset the partial cost of air tickets for any class on Singapore Airlines or its low-cost carrier, Scoot. It can also be used to purchase luxury and duty free goods on Singapore Airlines’ online shop, KrisShop, or be converted to third-party merchant’s reward points.
How can I get Krisflyer miles?
Before you are able to earn miles, you will first need to be a KrisFlyer member. Membership registration is free and can be submitted online.
Singapore Airlines occasionally run membership campaign and gives out free miles with new registrations. Try to search for the promo code and enter it into the registration form to receive some free miles for a start.
Once you are a member, KrisFlyer miles can be earned in the following ways:
- Taking a flight on Singapore Airlines (SQ), its budget airline Scoot (TR). Star Alliance airlines, and selected partner airlines.
- Converting credit card rewards points to miles
- Renting a car from selected transport companies
- Shopping with Singapore Airline’s retail partners or on Krisflyer’s online store, KrisShop
KrisFlyer miles credited to your account are valid for a period of 3 years, from the month they are earned.
When some of your miles reach the expiry date but you have not yet accumulated sufficient miles for the ticket you plan to redeem, you can choose to extend it for another 6 months by paying USD 12 every 10,000 miles or using 1,200 existing miles to extend every 10,000 miles.
Higher-tier KrisFlyer members (Elite Silver & Elite Gold) enjoy the additional benefit of extending expiring miles for 12 months at the same cost.
What can I use the KrisFlyer miles for?
It is usually more advisable to redeem flight tickets with your miles if you have sufficient miles or upgrade your flights to business/ first class.
However, in the event that your miles are expiring and they are not enough for flight tickets, you can choose to buy something or simply donate them to charities!
Below are all the ways you can use your KrisFlyer miles:
1. Redeeming Singapore Airline (SQ) flight tickets
This option offers the best value for your miles.
Members can choose to redeem one-way or return flight tickets on all flight classes, subject to the availability of class types on the selected routes.
It is useful to note that redeemed tickets (also called award tickets by SIA) exclude airport charges, fees, and taxes. You will need to fork out some cash, usually less than S$100 per ticket, as you complete the booking process. Despite having to pay for part of the tickets in cash, it is still very worthwhile especially when you redeem a long-haul flight or business class ticket that costs thousands of dollars for each trip.
How to redeem your miles online via singaporeair.com website or SingaporeAir mobile app
- Log-in to singaporeair.com with your KrisFlyer number or email address.
- Under ‘Book Trip’, Select ‘Redeem flights’ and enter your desired itinerary.
- Select cabin ‘Class’ and search.
- Select your preferred flight time by clicking on the number of miles displayed under ‘Saver’ or ‘Advantage’ options.
- Click ‘Continue’ button.
- Continue with the booking process until the ‘Payment’ page. Make payment for the ‘taxes, fees and charges’ with your credit card, debit card, PayPal or Alipay.
You can choose to redeem either a Saver award flight ticket, Advantage award flight ticket or KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes ticket. Read the differences below:

Redeem a Advantage award flight ticket
For travelers whose travel dates are more rigid, it will be best to redeem an Advantage award ticket instead. There are more seats available for this redemption type and thus there is a lower chance of being placed on a waitlist. Apart from the predictability of getting to travel on preferred dates, Advantage award ticket holders are also entitled to change flight dates for free.
The drawback is that the cost of Advantage award tickets is nearly 100% more than the Saver award tickets. The number of miles needed to redeem a ticket for various destinations and seat classes is as follows:
Destination / One Way (‘000 Miles) | E | B | SF |

Do note that flights, routes, destinations, seat class, and the number of miles needed in this programme may vary from month to month. Also, there may not be any promotions in some busy months.
2. Upgrading cabin classes on Singapore Airline (SQ) flights
If you have limited miles, you may consider using them to upgrade your cabin class instead. KrisFlyer allows members to use miles to upgrade to the next seat class with 15% to 25% lesser miles than redeeming a full ticket.
How to upgrade to Business or First Class with miles
- You will only be able to upgrade to a higher cabin class with miles for your existing bookings. Click on this link and select ‘Upgrade Flights’ to check whether an upgrade is allowed for your route.
- Log-in to singaporeair.com website or the SingaporeAir mobile app.
- Select ‘Bookings’ and ‘ Upcoming flights’ or click on this link.
- Select the booking to upgrade.
- You will see an option for you to upgrade and proceed with your upgrade.

3. Offsetting cost of a regular SQ flight ticket
This is a good way to utilise your expiring miles while still keeping the bulk of the remaining miles that will only expire some time away.
The conversion rate is 1,050 KrisFlyer miles to SGD 10 of the ticket price (SGD 1 = 105 miles). Members will need to redeem a minimum of 1,050 miles for each booking.
Unlike redeeming a full flight ticket or upgrading a seat class, miles can also be used to offset airport taxes, charges, and fees under this option.
How to use KrisFlyer miles for partial payment
- Log-in to singaporeair.com website or the SingaporeAir mobile app.
- Proceed with booking a flight as usual.
- Once you have hit the payment page or screen, there will be an option for you to choose to pay using KrisFlyer miles.
- Enable that option and you can then decide the number of miles you wish to use for this booking.
4. Redeeming Scoot (TR) flight tickets using Krisflyer miles
Making redemptions on Scoot flight is more straightforward.
It is the same as using miles to offset a regular SQ flight ticket on singaporeair.com, except that booking will now be made through flyscoot.com.
The conversion rate for Scoot is the same as Singapore Airlines, 1,050 KrisFlyer miles for SGD 10 value (SGD 1 = 105 miles). Minimum redemption of 1,050 miles is required for each booking and miles can also be used to offset airport taxes, charges, and fees.
5. Making purchases online with Krisflyer miles
Apart from using Krisflyer miles on flight tickets, they can also be used to purchase products ranging from electronics, duty-free items, cosmetics, attraction tickets, to booking hotels.
These are the SIA affiliated services where you can use your miles:
- KrisShop.com: Online retailer offering a large assortment of products, including kitchenware, electronics, cosmetics, luxury bags, duty-free, and prepacked food.
- Krisflyer Vrooms: Online booking platform for worldwide hotels & rental cars.
- Pelago: Mobile app offering deals on attractions, tours, and activities.
6. Converting Krisflyer miles to other reward programmes
Signed up for too many loyalty programmes? You can consolidate your reward points by converting Krisflyer miles to one of your favourite programmes below:
- NTUC Linkpoints: Pay for purchases at Fairprice, Cheers, NTUC Health, Unity, NTUC Learning Hub and more.
- CapitaStar: Exchange for CapitaMall shopping vouchers or pay off parking fees at CapitaMall properties.

7. Donating miles for a good cause
If you simply don’t need the miles, don’t let them expire either! Donate them to one of the two designated causes below:
- The SIA Group Carbon Offset Programme: The donation will go into purchasing independently verified carbon offsets (e.g planting trees).
- Miles for Good: The donated miles will go into redeeming flight tickets to grant travel wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses or help low-income families in Singapore.
