Chinese New Year celebration in Singapore is never complete without taking a stroll along the Chinatown district.

Haw Par Villa

Yes. Haw Par Villa is open during Chinese New Year! The park is open all year round including public holidays. Only its Hell’s Museum is closed on Mondays, which means that you can explore all of the park’s features from Tuesday (Chu 1) onwards.

The Younger generation may not know that Haw Par Villa was once a must-go destination for foreign tourists to Singapore in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The park contains statues and dioramas, depicting Chinese mythology, legends, folktales, and novels, such as Journey to the West, Legend of the White Snake, Chinese Zodiac, etc.

Haw Par Villa is open from 9 am – 10 pm (the last entry is at 9.30pm). Admission is free for Haw Par Villa but you will need to buy a ticket to visit the Hells’ Museum at $18 for adults and $10 for children (7-12 years old). According to its website, Hell’s Museum is not recommended for children below the age of 9.

Watch a CNY movie at the cinema

From heartwarming movies such as My Best Friend’s Breakfast and Reunion Dinner to blockbuster movies such as New Kung Fu Cult Master 1 and Spider-Man, there are plenty of movies to consider watching at the cinema during CNY:

Hotpot with families and friends

Suki-ya Japanese Hotpot - Beef and Pork

The Chinese tradition of hotpot dates back to more than 2000 years ago during the “Three Kingdoms period” (200–280 AD). The tradition has stayed rooted in most Chinese communities and having hotpot is almost a must for all occasions, including Chinese New Year. 

You can easily create your own hotpot at home by buying HaiDiLao Hotpot Seasoning (as the broth), vegetables, meats, seafood, and sauces from Fairprice.

The hotpot chains below are still open throughout Chinese New Year. Alternatively, you may also refer to this list of restaurants, fast-food, cafes, bubble tea that are still open during CNY 2022 to spend time with your families and friends.

Chinatown Light-Up

In view of the Chinese New Year celebration, streets along New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, and South Bridge Road in Chinatown will be decorated with lanterns, lightings, and tigers sculptures. The street light-up will be up on 7 January 2022 and removed on 02 March 2022.

River Hongbao 2022

River Hongbao 2022 (春到河畔 2022) will be held at Gardens By the Bay for a second consecutive year from 30 January to 6 February 2022.

As there is a participant limit of 4000 participants, registration for River Hongbao 2022 will commence as early as 19 January 2022.

Admission to River Hongbao is free as long as you manage to get a ticket. You can grab your ticket via this registration link. If the tickets run out or if you would like to witness the event from the comfort of your home, join the Virtual River Hongbao instead.

Rainforest Lumina at Singapore Zoo

If you are bringing kids along, the Rainforest Lumina at Singapore Zoo is definitely your top must-go destination for the night.

It combines fun and education in a festive way with its unique lighting and audio-visual experience, making it perfect to spend the CNY nights with your kids. 

The Rainforest Lumina opens from 7.15 pm – 12 am (the last entry is at 11.15 pm). The admission rate is as below:

  • Adult/ Youth: $18
  • Child (3-12 years old): $14
  • Senior Citizen (above 60 years old): $14

Night cycling at Round Island Route

The first phase of Round Island Route has finally been completed and officially opened on 22 January 2022, just in time for CNY 2022.

The Round Island Route (RIR) is a continuous 150km park connector surrounding the island. The first phase, stretching across 75km, will connect key parks in the eastern half of Singapore, such as Rowers’ Bay, Sengkang Riverside Park, Pasir Ris Park, Changi Beach Park, and East Coast Park.

To go from one end to another end, you can either start cycling from Rowers’ Bay (near Seletar) or Berlayer Creek (near Labrador Park). Alternatively, you can also start from any point here.

Tips: If the weather allows, try going around 4 pm to 7 pm and you might get to see the otter family!
